Latest Trip
well, just back from the latest trip to the Peak District, 5 smashing days. It seems to be a pattern that the first day of our jollies seems to be horrendous, then it gets better, this one was no exception.
We set off for Leek at about 2.30pm ish. Onto the A1, then M18 heading for M1. The van seemed to be not quite right, down on power, and stalled at the A1/M18 junction. It started straight away though. Onto the M1 and gridlock. Stop, start for an hour so we came off and headed for Chesterfield. This also was stop start for the next two hours. Van seemed to be going better though (You know those cartoons where a cloud is following somebody and raining on them ?, well thats us with traffic jams) Eventually we got through the jam and speeded up heading for Leek. Van now got very spluttery until we reached a hill where it refused to go up. On with the hazards and up with the bonnet. I had some idea of what it might be, as I'd taken off the "hot air into the air filter from the manifold" pipe back in the summer as it rattled. Silly boy, I could see ice on the base of the carb. By the time I got back in the van the thing had defrosted and we were on our way again. Still a bit dodgy, but it kept on going. Icing on the cake was where I remarked to the wife about how many gatso cameras were in this area. Ten seconds after that fateful remark, flash, flash I got my picture taken. Awaiting the letter with trepidation. Eventually got to the campsite at 07:45pm. To put more icing on the cake, I spilled a full cup of hot chocolate (luckily not mine) over the worktop, some dripped into the fridge internals and tripped the power at the supply post. Could tomorrow be worse ?
Well it was actually a good day. Brilliant sunshine and a good walk in Dovedale. All the woes of the previous day seemed miles away until... we'd just finished a game of cards when eldest daughter said she could smell a funny smell. After ascertaining it wasn't one of us, we all sniffed in unison to try and find the source. The wife then says she can hear a hissing sound. Out to the gas locker to find the rubber hose had fractured an inch from the regulator and was chucking butane all over the place. Remade the hose and all was well. Until... just before bedtime wifey puts the water pump on and the lights go out and the pump cycles at about 4 beats a minute. New leisure battery me thinks. Next day we went into Leek and bought a new battery.
Rest of the holiday was uneventful (oh apart from me going slowly over a rather steep sleeping policeman and bending the tailpipe, oh and the man in the caravan two pitches down dying of a heart attack (seriously!)) Apart from Sunday the weather was brilliant and we came back feeling refreshed.
Next trip ?, don't know yet but will let you all know so you can stay inside :)

How did you get the camera to flash in a CF. You must get the piccy on Colin's pictures. I haven't found a steep enough downhill stretch with a camera for my old van yet! Thanks for the story though as it's nice to know we don't suffer alone.
