WILD OR FLY CAMPING AT THE RACES
last weekend me and my wife susan did a spot of the above.
what happened was we went to market rasen on saturday as there was a race meet the next day. but low and behold the caravan park had shut for the season so was booted off. so we went out and saw the gates to the car park. i looked at sue and DING! thought yes looks like a nice place to stay the night. when all of a sudden a car sped past and blocked the gates. i got out and explained we were in limbo but no help was forth coming. so called him a *&%*(% and a *&^%^&*&
and decided to go look for a layby when just down the road, well at the side of the racecourse itself was a rally field with caravan and a motorhome on it and a big plackard saying caravan and camping club on it.
well i looked at sue and she looked at me and once again DING! were in here.
i got out and asked how much. six pounds for the weekend. well it was the answer to a maidens prayer. yup we'll have some of tha......
when he came back are you a member of the caravan and camping club. no i replied but i am a member of the caravan club. can't let you on sorry. your joking. nope you can make yourself a member but its 30 pounds. no way i said, called him a **(*^& *&*&*%$" and got back in the van and went off well pi*sed, looking for a layby.
well i dont know if any of you have been to market rasen before but we remebered that just outside of the town is a large wood where there is a picnic area and ponds and toilets and a refreshment cabin.
DING...... our place for the night. we drove in and got tucked up well away from the road at first it was cosy lots of people walking their dogs but it soon began to fall dark. had we done the right thing.............to be continued.

CONTINUED
the intention was to spend saturday and sunday night at the racecourse and then move on to a small village up the road called claxby to have 4 days fishing. so this was the first night of our two intended nights. as we settled down we cracked open the amber nectar and rustled up some grub. well it went down so well that by 8.30pm we had had a few and was falling asleep so decided to go to bed early (which wasnt bad for me as i nearly always hit the sack around midnight). anyway, as soon as my head hit the pillow i was out for the count.
the next thing i heard was a car about 10 yards from the van reving like mad lights on full beam and then all of a sudden sped off. quite scary as it woke me up out of a deep sleep. the sound of the car was quite recocnisable, it was of the sporty type, you know the sound like there was holes in the exhaust or it was half hanging off. i looked at the clock, it was just turned one in the morning. susan was still asleep, didnt know whether to wake her or not. decided to leave her and try and get my head back down.
as i tried to go back to sleep things began to run through my head, mainly that we didnt have any contact with the outside world. phone wise that was. the reason why was that the signal was none existant and was rapidly depleating the batteries because it was searching the network all the time. we had our electric charges but no in car charges..........well we expected to have electric hook-up.
so you can see where my mind was wandering, what if.......or, if this happens what next. it began to rain which drowned out the odd noise of a passing vehicle from the distant road now and again. i cant remember if i had fell off to sleep again or what but the car came back. i lifted the curtain and the window was full of condensation i tried to wipe it with my hand but all i could see was the bright lights from the headlights. no sooner as it had arrived it sped away again. i didnt look at the clock i just wanted to belive they were young kids out joyriding for the night or it was a place were young couples did what they do and the reason they didnt stop was because we were parked there. but to tell you the truth there were many other senarios going through my head from robbers to mad axe murderers. i must have talked myself to sleep because the next thing i heard was loud music, very loud music. i looked through the window and a car was parked about 20 yards from the van i wiped the window and saw that the drivers door was open. i looked at the clock and it was 4.10am. i lay quiet the music was turned down, i looked through the window but the car was still there door still open and my heart racing like i dont know what. the thing was it was still raining and i mean raining (piddling it down it was). all of a sudden i was frightened out of my skin by a shrieking yell of JAKE, JAKE ....... it went quite for what seemed an eternity yet it was only a few seconds. by this time it had disturbed sue, and not knowing what was happening, being half asleep. we then heard another shriek of JAKE COME HERE . i realised that it was someone with a dog, by this time the old ticker was going like the clappers. i told sue to get her head back down it was just someone walking their dog. i didnt tell her it was four in the morning. she dropped back off and the car drove off. it wasnt the same car as the one earlier in the night, i could tell by the sound it was much quieter. although still nervy i breathed a sigh of relief and was pleased to hear sue snoring away, as she was nervous at fly/wild camping in the first place. i wondered if it was worth trying to go back to sleep and cant remember if i did or not, but what happened next did really s*it me up...... to be continued as its getting late WAY PAST MY BEDTIME.

CONTINUED AGAIN...........
well what happened was...... (always wanted to say that as i'm big fan of JETHRO). anysways. when we first realised that we intended to fly/wild camp our fears wasn't with what could happen with regards our safety but with regards the police turning up and moving us on. the embarassment and the inability to move on because i new i was going to have a bloody good drink. i was now hopeing the police would come a knocking, but there was no chance of that we were well tucked away. too well infact for our own good.
well what happened next was scary indeed. the rain had baited but all of a sudden there was an almight bang on the roof of the van. i must have been dosing because it sh*t me up good and proper i sat up almost instantly i thought something heavy like a slab of concrete or a great lump of wood had been thrown on top of us. but not only that, simultaneously there was a loud screaching noise that was hard to describe, it was like a cross between a baby screaming and a cat meowing when they catameow. then as that noise died down some sort of bird churped up with twooooooooooo directly above us. my heart was pounding. i didnt know whether to go outside or what. shaking like a leaf i lifted the curtain and saw ............. nothing. no car, no lights, no nothing, only darkness. all of a sudden there was scurrying sound around the van, in a stop start motion. what ever it was, it was behind my head. but this time the curtain was staying where it was. i waited..... and i waited and waited. there was no more noise. i reluctantly lifted the curtain, my hand trembling slightly, my heart beating so loud it echoed in the van, or it seemed that loud.
there was nothing there. jesus, i thought to myself. i lay back down and realised that the almighty bang on the roof was an avalanche of water that the tree above had decided to release from its leaf stripped branches, and the screeching was some sort of animal maybe a fox with a bird joining in for good measure has it had been disturbed by the noise as well. or thats at least what i wanted to believe. i dont believe in ghosts, or do i. well, not unless you see a shadow circle the van twice once one way and then the other way. a shadow when there is complete darkness and on top of that there was a gust of wind appear from nowhere that rocked the van slightly from side to side. do i believe in ghosts?
i thought it should be getting light now so looked at the clock again. it was 4.10am ....... wait a minute it was 4.10am half an hour ago, or an hour ago, well a while ago. i listened carefully it was still ticking. i flicked the lighter and looked at the van clock it said .......4.10am i was now begining to think is it supernatural. i couldnt believe it, it was as though time had stood still, all this couldn't have happened without time elapsing. and whilst all this was happening sue was still snoring her little head off. i could have murdered a drink, but didnt wan't to disturb sue. i just wanted to get through the night, preferably asleep. what the hell was going to happen next. i new there was no way i was going to go to sleep, or was i asleep and this was one big dream or even a bigger nightmare..................
this wasn't the end by anymeans

WHAT DO YOU MEAN. its not by anymeans over, i've changed my pants twice already. sorry mate if that was me id do one of two things. 1st slowly creep to the door open it very slowly, then run like a s**t off a stick, o yeh wake the misses up, there again she snores like a wild boar and would'nt hear me, just run, shell come around soon, maybe in a different place with someone or something different, but there you go. or the 2'nd thing would of been get my keys, start the beddy up and drive straight ahead not matter what. only knowing that at 4.00 in the morning the police would eventually see, driving a van through some poor sods back garden with a bollock naked scared s**tless welshman in the seat would draw some attention. thats what i would of done, probably go for the 1'st option though. just to have one night without her snoring would be heaven, ok you lost a bloody good van, but you never know they might dump her a few miles up the road. still lost a bloody good van though. but thats just me. well off now before she wakes up and reads this, then i will be parked up somewhere telling you a similar story..

I guess the story is going to be concluded on Samain eve. (31st to you lot).
Now If you lot were us you would know that ghost can only walk the earth on Samain, and you've got to leave some bread and a drink for them on your hearth.
when wild camped I rely on a 1,000,000 watt torch and a big stick. sleeping pills help too.
love the story. did you say where it was??
must put it on Wild camping. It sounds like a fun place.

stratford race course
I once pulled into stratford racecourse late on and put up the tent by the headlights. I picked a lovely spot with no near neighbours.
All night we were pestered by flies. the next morning I found out why
a/ no one else had pitched there.
b/ the flies were busy.
There in all it's glory was the DUNGHEAP.
the man taking the money laughed and gave us the next night free.
I don't know if it's still used as a campsite when there are no races on but it was a good place
cheap and free showers (only small tho, for the jockeys).
can't wait for the rest of the story.

WELL HERE GOES
thats the one bill and tricia - willigham woods. as you drive into the layby you can go to the left where the refreshment hut is or to the right where the picnic area is. there are two large boulders to the entrance. we parked uo right at the bottom.
anyway, after that i must have fallen asleep and woke at 8.00am. phew, and there was light, and there was talking....... i looked out of the window and there sat at one of the picnic tables were three blokes with half a dozen dogs. i breathed a sigh of relief. i clambered of the missus who was still snoring her head off, emptied the old bladder and made a cup of the old rosie lee. as i sat there drinking it i reflected on the events of the night before and smiled to myself. was it that bad, was it real or was it a dream. to this day i dont know. but what i did know was that at ten oclock we were meeting our daughter son-in-law and grand kids up at the racecourse. it was our intention to have a round of golf then go to the races and then go back to our plot for the second of our two night stay where i was going to cook tea for us all.
so there i was drinking my tea thinking do we deviate from our origional plan or pretend everything was a dream dont say owt and spend another night there.
well first we met the kids and grand kids up at the course. first lot of bad news was - we had parked in the wrong part of the car park ie we were on the owners and trainers part so had to upsticks and move to the rear of where the horse boxes were and then i found out there was no GOLF. the course was closed on race days. i was now really ed especially with having a very restless night as well. so i was kicking and stomping around and of course i was grumpy old grandad. so i decide to go for a walk into market rasen and get a racing post. well who did i see on the way down but the two h*les in the rally field (probaly an acre in size) who the night before had refused us entry into it. and guess what, the old fart smiled at me. fffffffffffffuc* i could have....... anyway i went on my way all the time not knowing how i was going to tell everyone that after the races i was going home no matter what. i wasnt going to spend another night like that. you know what its like, you practice it a million times in your head and you know its a waste of time because it never comes of of that orriface called a mouth the way you meant it to.
anyway when i got back with the paper we picked our horses out and went to the meeting. what can i say. didnt back one winner and did hundred quid. well you can really see now that i was ed off big style. but i couldnt bring myself to spoil the rest our holiday especially the four days we were going to spend at claxby. so silly fool me didnt say anything and went back to the spot where we stopped the night before. i cooked tea and waved the family off. BIG MISTAKE, HUGE MISTAKE..........

Ohh-err...
I’ve often thought about what would happen if I could not find a campsite.
You’ve now made me afraid to even set out on a trip…

don't worry too much Haydyn. last year we spent 63+ days out and only 1 night on a campsite [needed the laundrette. it cost £12+ laundrette].
the rest of the time we were in the van in the south round devon and cornwall and scotland, the western highlands and we had no problems like that. the worst I had was one nite very little sleep coz of a courting couple [she was a bit noisy]
that was our fourth year of similar numbers of days. we've had the odd car toot the horn as they go past
it does happen i know and especially abroad. apparently there there is a technique of filling the van with some sort of gas that knocks the occupants out enabling them to be robbed safely.
good locks and sensible precautions are good. a loud alarm would not be a bad idea along with signs saying it was alarmed[several languages] and a very big baseball bat, dog etc.
