what ive learnt so far.

hi. after refitting the cylinder head on the slant 4 2279cc engine i noticed a heavy and constant leak once engine had reached full running temp. engine would missfire and run badly.

what i learnt. turns out the garage fitted the cylinder head but missed out fitting one inportant small copper washer when refitting the thermostat. there is a small copper washer (see photo) that should be put back into its place because if you run the engine without the washer. the cooling system water shall find its way into the engine sump and thin out the engine oil which may damage the engine full stop.

after going back with this to the garage as a complaint and pointing out there mistake they put the copper washer back in its rightfull place.

im not a mehcanic but i can follow and understand instructions. im going to flush out the old engine oil and refill.

Question. besides looking at the dipstick or engine filler cap and rad cap for signs of water. i need a kit to show me by testing a sample of engine oil or rad water for signs of oil water contamination. is there such a kit. reason. after changing the oil i want to to be sure water in not getting into the oil by checking it from time to time.

thanks for replies in advance.

Copper sealing washer.

Hi wotnot,

I wish I had a pound for every time I have known this to happen, and the water drains into number two cylinder to cause a misfire and can cause a bent con-rod and seized piston rings (Ouch) can be a costly mistake!
I always put some sealant on that washer before tightening it down, did he remember to replace the oil seal on the oil feed to the cam-box?
He should have made sure that oil feed was clear while the head was off or there will be no oil feed to the camshaft.

hi doujoy. thanks for pointing that out to me. do you know what. i bet he didnt
bother to anything how it should be done. he didnt bother to read the haynes manuel i supplied. he didnt know about the importance of the copper washer do i can imagaine he didnt check the seal you mentioned.

using garages is like playing russian roulette. how can i check to see if the pipe has been fitted correctly. can the pipe be seen easily or must the engine be dismantled. as i said im not a mehcanic but i have alot of common sense straight abillity to follow and understand instructions. if you pass me a tip on the pipe it would be much welcomed. dont want to ruin tge camper as it just passed its mot without fault. well if the engine went that would nacker the hole idea.

Leaking oil feed.

Hi wotnot,

If your engine is not leaking oil down behind the starter motor then he has replaced that O-ring seal successfully, by letting it run up to temp. you will soon know!
I hope all is well.
