Rescue tractor problems.

Hi to all,

Jim old MF 135 began to have fuel problems just short off Perth so the old Ransome and implements have just made it to Jim's yard about four miles from where I live, but at least it has got a bit nearer and will not be in danger of sinking back down into that loch-side marshland.

Hi to all,

One small bonus during the rescue operation with all the winching and dragging one of the tracks freed off and started to turn freely, so the first job will be to free off the other one so that it can be moved under its own steam so to speak.
That would make life a lot easier and prove that the gearbox was working and the brake bands on the steering levers were ok.

Steam pressure.

Hi to all,

A high pressure steam clean of the old Ransome tractor should maybe get the old beast moving and freed off, followed by a good old diesel soaking of all the seized rollers in the lower tracks.
This will be a long slow job to renovate this 1953 lump of seized up rust back into something like the working machine it once was, but it will keep my busy for the next few years.

Got things moving.

Hi to all,

Busy day today Clio MOT in the morning then unload and steam-clean the old tractor in the afternoon, got both tracks freed off so she now rolls along on tow, checked out gears and clutch and they are all working.
Next job will be to repair the carb. and one of the brake bands on the left turn track lock and get it started so that it can be loaded and brought to my back yard for the rest of its renovation work.
Driving back from Jim's yard with the Bedford and the exhaust broke off at the back of the main box so had a bit of welding and refitting to do after tea,
but all repaired now and ready for the road.
Just a normal day really!!

Rained off.

Hi to all,

No work getting done today due to heavy rain, (must be summertime) so I am glad I got the exhaust repair work done last night.
All I can do today is load up all the parts and some fuel for the next dry day that will let me get some of the jobs done on the tractor.
The guy has been down for his money so all bought and paid for a total of £450.00, worth that just for scrap.

Back out to Jim's yard.

Hi to all,

Tomorrow I intend to get the carb leak repaired and put some fuel through to see if I can get the old tractor to start again, maybe get a look into that steering brake lever brake band that is broken and see what can be done to repair it.
The sooner it is drivable the sooner it can be brought around to my back yard and I can get on with the other work that is needing done.

Tractor progress,

Hi to all,

The day started with the aim of curing the carb leak, greatly reduced but still managing to drip but did manage to repair that broken brake band and get the top plate off of the gearbox to weld in a new threaded bolt to reattach the brake band to the operating lever.
Then got the air cleaner striped and cleaned, the next step was the set up the coil ign. and got it started and drove it around the yard under its own power, first time for five years.
The tracks are still in need of some work freeing off the rollers but that drive around did a lot of good, got things moving and freed up.
Once the fuel tank has been replaced we should be ready to load it up and bring into my own back yard for a complete strip down with the track removed.

Tractor work.

Hi to all,

Another problem solved on my tractor I have now found a replacement fuel tank for it (the old one has rotted through) so that can fitted on my next visit to Jim's yard better than a loose bottle of petrol!
Next problem to be solved is a replacement float chamber for the carb, someone has tried to braise the one that is fitted (badly).

Cheap solutions.

Hi to all,

I my search for a solution to my leaking carb. yesterday I spotted an aluminium cup which looks about the right size and depth, if it does fit my plan is to fit it using a spring clip like the one's used to hold the glass bowl on the old lift pumps.
Worth checking out and if it work great cheapness!

Ramp time.

Hi to all,

I have been measuring up in the hope of getting my old tractor all the way round to the back of the house instead of being parked out in the drive, and so cut down the tramping back and forward with tools and jacks and the like.
So I got to work making a ramp to bring the tractor down the two steps onto my footpath and then it can be taken round to the workshop door, an old scaffolding plank cut to make each track and braced with four two by two cross piece's and locked into place by two steel ground pins to hold the ramp in place.
So now ready for delivery early next week!

Tank mounts.

Hi to all,

Because the fuel tank on my old tractor has rotted through I have acquired one off of a old petrol generator which is a flat one gallon tank and can be mounted in front of the driver and above the gearbox cover, so brackets had to be made to support it clean the filler cap for gearbox topping up.
Because the full measured width of the tractor has to allow for the track adjustment brackets it measures 37 inches and my gate is just 38 so I had removed the gate this morning which gives me 40 inches.
So the tractor will make it home one day this week and the real work can start.

Leaking carb.

Hi to all,

Before we can think about transporting the tractor from Jim's yard to my place I thought I should try to find a replacement float chamber for the carb because it is loosing twice as much petrol than the engine takes to run.
But finding the chamber among the Ransome parts on offer drew a blank so I had to improvise, first try was with a small glass jar which was just the right size but found that the float would not fit inside it, the second item of the correct size has done the job and that was a metal flask cup.
So with the float a easy fit inside the cup and a good seal onto the base of the carb for now held in place by two cable-tie's the loss of fuel has been stopped.
I would like to get the tractor running now long enough to check the magneto timing before we try loading onto a trailer to bring it into my own place,
should be interesting!

Fuel trank.

Hi to all,

The generator fuel tank has been given support legs so that it can be sited in front of the driver with the battery mounted underneath to feed the coil mounted on top of the engine casing, and with the carb leak taken care of all that we intend to prove now is that the engine will continue to run long enough to drive the tractor on and off the trailer and round to my workshop.
Going by the sound of the engine when it is running I think it has a sticky valve, a lot of popping and the odd backfire.
With just a straight through exhaust it is very loud and the timing may not be just at the right setting, the next stage is to get the tractor to my workshop.

Carburetor fault,

Hi to all,

With the tractor starting and running and then stopping without reason we found out why today to much fuel flooding the engine, the reason a broken needle in the variable jet carb.
The guy who owned it said it used a lot of fuel and leaked a lot out of the carb and now we know why, it is now clear someone has done a lot of messing about and caused a bit of damage doing it.

Broken and wrong.

Hi to all,

Once I got all the bits back to my own workshop I found that an oversized needle had been fitted and the crub-screw was missing so the needle had been jammed into place, possibly why it was broken.
The first job was to get the old needle out, so did not break off was drilled out and a crub-screw made to thread into the needle locking hole, all I now need is a suitable needle to replace it.
The nearest I can find on-line is one off of a Amal motorcycle carburettor,
so far a bit pricey but it has to be replaced.

A made up needle.

Hi to all,

For now I am going to try out a made up copper needle and if that works to get it loaded and unloaded bringing it home to my own corner of the woods where I can work with causing any problems to anyone else that will great.

Carburation.

Hi to all,

If the carburettor can't be repaired I might have to convert an SU carb off of an old Mini 850cc which would mean making up some kind of conversion flange to match up with the manifold on the tractor.
At least then I would have a means of setting the mixture and controlling the amount on fuel being drawn into the engine, with the present system and carb the only control is through the throttle there on controls or setting screws on the carb that is fitted.

Ransome engine.

Hi to all,

After getting the engine to run only for short bursts I have decided to take the engine out of the chassis and bring it into my own workshop for a strip down so that it can be checked for bore ware and get the valves and seats redone.
There are on timing marks to be found so that can be set up correctly at the same time and the carburettor can be replaced (possibly with an old SU), and a adaptor plate made up so that it can be mounted.
