A new project.

Hi to all,

Going back to tractors which was my first working days in engineering I have the chance to buy a small Ransom fruit field tractor, which is in need of quite a lot of restoration work but as a member of the tractor and engine club is does give more credibility.
Arranged for transport by another member of the club for next week in return for helping him with another tractor engine job in setting up the valve timing and replacing the sump.
Should be a very interesting summer with a lot to keep me busy!

New project in the mud.

Hi to all,

There has been a delay in the collection of my new project because it is laying in the middle of a very wet field and today it has a fresh coating of snow.
So maybe next week will be a better time to try and recover the tractor, plus with the clock change there will be more time and daylight.

A pattern emerges.

Hi to all,

When I found my old Bedford CF it was in the middle of a field near Derby and was bought then by a chap from Edinburgh and brought north then I bought it from a chap in Livingston, and here we have an old tractor once more stuck in the middle of a field near Dunkeld which I hope will soon travel south about twenty five miles where it can be brought back to life.

Working in the mud.

Hi to all,

This afternoon I am going to see what is needed to get this old tractor started so that it can be driven from the field to a trailer by the roadside, I get the feeling by the way this guy is speaking it has been left sitting for a long time.
He tells me it needs a carb. gasket which means someone has been fiddling with the engine and trying to get it to run, if that turns out to be the guy who owns it I think we could be in trouble.
So tools are loaded and he tells me to bring petrol (not a good sign) so I have put on everything I think I might need, but there is always something you wish you had brought when you go to a job like this.

Being held to Ransome.

Hi to all,

Well the old Ransome still lay's up to its axles in the marchland field of mud but quite a few of its bits have made a return to a useful life after a mornings work in my shed.
The carb. and throttle body have been washed and cleaned along with the fuel filter and connections, the throttle cable was totally seized and had to be scraped for now it has been replaced by a spare choke cable I had in stock.
But the throttle slides and jets are clean free and working like they used to with all gaskets replaced, a new spark plug has been found so if we have a spark we should be able to fire the old beast into life on my next visit.
Because the spark plug was broken I could not check for a spark but compression was good, so let's hope the mag. is still bumping out some juice.

Starting.

Hi Mike,

That is what I hope to do on my next visit but this time I will be better prepared (with welly boots) but so far I had to dig a hole to get the starting handle to turn full circle because it has sank into the marsh mud.
We have compression fuel and throttle and coke all I need now is a spark, taking a new spark plug up with me and maybe some easy-start.

This weekend.

Hi to all,

I think I have loaded everything needed for my visit to the sinking tractor and I hope to refit all the parts I brought home to clean and repair, should manage a visit this weekend but it looks like being a wet one and that is the last thing I need.
Cannot believe anyone is daft enough to leave a ton and half of tractor parked in the middle of a bog and then look shocked to see it had sunk!

Return visit to the new project.

Hi to all,

With the carb. and fuel system cleaned out and refitted and a replacement spark plug, new throttle cable and we had fuel going to all the right places and compression on the firing stroke things were looking good but alas on spark form the magneto.
I am hopping it is just a wiring problem but if not it could all get a bit expensive, still trying to free off the dog-clutch leveller which is sized in neutral and working in about a foot of mud, so not great but with some replacement wiring on my next visit and a volt meter to check for a reading who knows.

Magneto failure.

Hi to all,

If the magneto turns out to have faded away I might have to set up a coil and ign. system battery fed, most engine's I have seem with that duel system had a drive for both distributor and magneto.
Finding a new or second-hand magneto for an old Ransome built in the nineteen fifties might be a bit difficult.

Figureing out an alternative

Hi to all,

Figuring out an alternative means of getting timed ign. sparks to arrive at the right place and at the right time once in every fourth stroke.
But the first big job is to find someone with a big enough tractor to drag or lift the poor wee Ramsome out of the marsh before it disappears from sight!

To dam cold.

Hi to all,

My poor wee tractor still lay's deep in the marsh mud at the side of Butter-stone Loch, to cold to venture up there this week and on a holiday weekend close to madness just to try and get there.
So I will leave it for a week or so and hope that the ground gets a chance to dry-out a bit, walking around it is hard going when you up to your knee's in mud.
