low oil pressure

Hi all,

I posted a while back about a new oil pump for my 81 cf camper 2.3 petrol. I have since fitted the new pump in the hope this would address the low oil pressure i was experiencing. No such luck and after a while of fiddling with the distributer i now have a CF that sounds like sh** and still has low oil pressure. Before i relent and take it to my local garage (Who i trust but would rather save the pennies) has any one got any other suggestions. I have tried the obvious stuff - new oil, new filter with a one way valve, and have checked for any obvious leaks. I will fine tune the ignition timing once i am convinced the pump and thus distributer won't be coming out any time soon!

Thanks Scott

Low oil pressure.

Hi daddyboards,

How low is the oil pressure you don't say what the PSI is, mine runs at 50 PSI cold and about 43 PSI hot at tick-over 25 PSI.
These engine's don't run at a very high oil pressure, but for a new oil pump I would think it should run hot at around 45 PSI.

Oil pumps.

Hi again,

I have had a no or very low oil pressure problem in my workshop days of the past and sometimes what I had to do was take out the oil pump and put a small amount of light grease into the pickup side of the pump to create a suction in an otherwise dry pump.
Might be worth a try before you cost yourself a garage bill.

I haven't checked psi but the oil warning light came on after a leak following a trip to Devon. It sounds dry when running, bit rattly. Going to do some more checks over Xmas. Just thought I'd see if any one had any suggestions. Thanks for getting back to me.

Low pressure.

Hi daddyboards,

Did the engine have a good oil pressure before the oil leak, where was the oil leak from?
If an oil seal on the pump got damaged while fitting into place in the block that could be a cause.

Thanks,

No issues prior to leak, leak appeared to be from the fuel pump mounting bolt. I've tried two different pumps. So don't think it is the pump but perhaps damaged ports in the housing? Plan so far is to get the engine out and check strainer and pipes inside sump. Will try and blow the ports inside the housing to check for a blockage too.

Oil pickup strainer.

Hi daddayboards,

I have in the past blown through the pickup strainer with the oil pump out and using a round piece of wood to block off one side of the while blowing out the other with an air line, can get messy but it is a quick way of making sure the pickup is not totally blocked and the pipe is clear.
But if the engine is coming out anyway then that is the way to go.

Oil pressure

Hi,I have had issues with oil or lack of it in the past. The way I noticed the lack of oil was on start up it took nearly 60 secs for the tappets to stop ratteling. The way I fixed this was to put in a referb pump. The tappets now go silent in 5to 8 secs .I never bother with pressure clocks. While I had the engine out I checked the oilways were clear and clean.I try not to make things complicated. Cheers+Beers Jim.
