gremlins

had my van out for a run last month to head for a Halloween party along the way i was praising how well the van was running when the gremlins decided it was time to come out & play they decided that i wasn't going to the party & burst a heater hose just to make sure & as if that wasn't enough by the I noticed the engine was so hot you could fry a egg on it  so i repaired said hose & let the engine cool for a hour whilst drowning my sorrows at a local inn ( soft drinks ) after which time i refilled the radiator with water & started the engine to be greeted with clouds of white smoke & a very lumpy idle a quick switch off was done & the RAC called who upon arriving tried to start the engine not a chance the engine was now hydraulic locked so it was back home on the back of the recovery truck & another small refreshment( the hard stuff this time ) now looking at removing the cylinder head to survey the damage :wall:

Halloween.

Hi Crawford,

You should have known better than to risk it on Halloween with the luck you have had with that Bedford, I think your Bedford likes being brought back home on an RAC truck.
Maybe you should buy your own RAC recovery truck and just leave the Bedford on the back of it you would save that yearly out lay.

Halloween hell.

Hi Crawford,

If the weather up your way is anything like here I hope you have somewhere inside to work on your engine, have you had a look yet?

work is getting done outside I dont mind the cold as long as it's dry, the head is at a local engineering place getting checked & skimmed, if it comes to it I'll swap in the spare 2.3 diesel engine while I work on the frontera engine

Diesel disaster

Hi Crawford,

How goes progress with that diesel engine hope it is just the cylinder head that needs surfacing and the bore of the cylinders are ok, if so you could get away with a skimmed head and a new gasket set.
It is about time you had some luck with this Bedford.

not done much to the van as yet other than clean the bores ~(2 & 3 were full of water) & clean the block there was no sign of head gasket failure so it looks like the head will need skimmed still waiting for the enigeering works to get back to me. in the meantime I've been busy working both mine & Jacz motorbikes at least I can work on them in the shed

Weather.

Hi Crawford,

The weather has stopped any outside on my Bedford as well so it is shed work for me until we can get back to some good old clean frost, my next job will be that overdrive gearbox but when I don't know.
Hope you get some good new on the cylinder head and a light skim is all that is needed to get you up and running again, maybe boat building is what we should be doing.

What now .

Hi Crawford,

Bad news indeed and after all your hard work, but all that damage did not happen on that one journey my money is on a lot of it being there long before you fitted that engine into your Bedford.
So what is your next move going to be, refit the Ford 2.5 diesel or look for another engine that will just slot in on the cross member and mounts that you have in place.
I think if it was myself I just might get out the petrol rag and matches, and I have been close to that on more than one moment of despair.

I have still the 2.3 diesel that I was going to fit before I was offered the frontera engine so that will be fitted until I manage to get a replacement head for the frontera engine.

thought I best update you all on the progress, after all the problems I've had with this engine I've managed to get hold of complete & more importantly runnig 2.3 frontera for not to much money well £200 & a round trip from aberdeen to london & back, which will be fitted in when the weather improves. at least all the hard work has been done so i just need to swap rocker covers, sump, clutch remove the egr, turn the turbo, in the mean time the frontera will be used as a daily runner for the winter mot expires in july

A good testing time.

Hi Crawford,

Well that means you have plenty of time to find out if this engine is as good as it needs to be before you do the transplant, hope it works out well for you.

I drove it back from london & the only faults was a low output from the alternator a exhaust blow now got a sore throat the engine never missed a beat & only used £120 fuel sitting at a steady 60 so all looks good for the transplant

A good test.

Hi Crawford,

The engine has certainly had a good test, it should be the answer to your problem and put you back on the road for the springtime.
