Hardened valve Seats Whats the general feeling among you experts, is it worth having this done if the engine is apart for other reasons like mine is (rebore and pistons). I have been quoted around £200 for this work and am thinking of getting it done but it would take a while to pay for itself I guess (saving on fuel additive)Any opinions? Hardening. Hi Mike,For me I have ran my old Bedford for the last six years without doing this expensive procedure, but if you have already got your engine striped down and being re-bored then is worth doing at the same time. Ship and hapth of tar come to mind! doujoy ---------------------- | Thu 13 Aug 2015 @ 15:57 |

We have the engine stripped down now and I took the head to the local engineering shop for the hardened valve seats to be fitted. However, when the engineer had a close look at the head and decided that there was not quite enough meat in the head casting to accommodate the new hardened seats, I must admit the inlet ports especially undercut the valve seats leaving very little metal to hold the insert in. Has anyone actually had this done successfully? In the end I didn't have the seats done and will spend the money instead on a big end re-grind and new shells. Mike | Mon 24 Aug 2015 @ 15:14 |

Valve seats. Hi Mike,I have a spare cylinder head if you need to get these valve seats done that way you can run the campervan while the head is getting an up grade. doujoy ---------------------- | Mon 24 Aug 2015 @ 18:02 |

That would be a great idea Doujoy but we have not yet got into the rally scene. We are however coming up to Oban again very early in October, could that work? Mike | Thu 27 Aug 2015 @ 10:45 |

Oban. Hi Mike,You would be travelling up to Glasgow on the M74 and then taking the A82 up to Inveraray then on to Lochgilhead then north to Oban? And the same return journey, or you could return by Perth or Crieff so that we could arrange a meeting point. doujoy ---------------------- | Thu 27 Aug 2015 @ 11:58 |

Head info. Hi Mike,I need to know if the cylinder head on your 2.3 engine has spinner tops on the exhaust valves or not because of matching the head up to the cam-box and bucket followers. doujoy ---------------------- | Fri 28 Aug 2015 @ 12:44 |

Any opinions? It's been a while since my CF turned a wheel in anger but I had my head done early on after burning out a valve seat. I used to drive my CF hard and I've been told that's the problem. If the CF is treated well, low revs, never hammered, then you're in with a chance. I used to drive mine like it was an Astra GTE. It never quite managed the performance or the handling but I think I suprised a few people in my time ---------------------- | Mon 31 Aug 2015 @ 14:56 |
