Overheating/ Water Loss

Hello,

I have a Bedford CF1 Facelift, (1983) 2.3 petrol. It has a coach built horsebox body on it, which I'm mid converting into a field kitchen.

I brought it from an elderly lady who had it sitting in a dry barn for 8 years. It has 58,000 on the clock.

I've replaced most of the bits, HT Cables, all the rubber pipes, liquids, filters etc. Took it on a test run and it overheated. So, I replaced the thermostat and flushed the radiator. Another test run and it overheated again. Took the plunge and replaced the head gasket and all other gaskets. Also checked the water pumb, cleaned everything and removed a small blockage from the system. I have just got back from another short (10 miles) test run and although it didn't steam much when I looked in the radiator (once it has cooled) the water level was very low. It took 2.5 L of water to bring the level back up to the top of the radiator.

Has anyone got any ideas what this might be and how I could fix it?
I'm at my wits ends.

Thanks is advance.

Hello. Is the cooling system getting up to pressure ok.Have you checked the rad cap to ensure the rubber seal is good and the spring is still effective in sealing against the filler lip. When chasing this type of issue I bypass the heater matrix so you can physically see everything possible for leaks. If no external signs of leakage and no contamination in the oil. Remove the thermostat and reassemble so when you start the engine from cold you can see the coolant moving in the rad looking in the filler hole. Have you replaced the water pump as impellor vanes can corrode away. Also I have seen engine hoses that have delaminated internally.

Thanks for the replies. Spending today having another look at it.

Quick question, has anyone fitted an expansion tank to the rad overflow and if so, did it work?
