engine oil

I have done just over 500 miles on my new engine and after checking the oil at the weekend noticed that the oil level was down to the min. level. would a new engine use up that amount of oil after only 500 miles

yes as it needs time to bed in the bores.

change the oil and filter using good decent oil and keep an eye on the oil level.

unless you have a leak then there are only a few ways for the engine to use oil

pistons rings not sealing allowing the compressed gas to enter the crankcase which in turn will force the oil out of the breather pipe into the inlet tract,

valve stem seals not sealing allowing oil to run down the valve stems.

oil leak from either a seal or gasket......

oil leak

if any of the things you mention are the cause that should be covered under the warranty, shouldn't it?

leaks will be.

proving that there have fitted new stem-seals and piston rings is another matter.
how long a warranty have they given you on the engine?????

oil leak

found out where I am loosing my oil from the front and rear mainshaft oil seals. so I get in touch with AB and he says they are not covered under the warranty but as a good faith gesture from him he will send me the new oil seals but I will have to pay the cost of fitting them. he says the warranty would cover items which may have broken like the con rods which is unlikely to happen. so after spending over £2000 the warranty is useless. it passed the MOT today.

I find it totally beyond belief and commonsense that anyone would recondition an engine and leave the old oil seals in !
To me it would throw great doubt on the quality of the rest of the Job !

Id be very wary of the condition of the engine if the seals had not been changed

oil leak

had a word with ab the other days and he has had it confirmed that the seals were new, but he suggested that we may have put the wrong oil in. we were told by (although he has denied this) to use 10/40 oil in the fitting instructions he sent us with the engine. according to the Haynes manual they recommend 20/50. my mechanic down an oil change at 500 miles and had put in 10/40 and the oil lost was still there. AB has suggested we do another oil change using 20/50 and see's what happens. so here go's

In my experience different oil grade will not cause or cure a failed oil seal. The only thing that will cause a leak are 1) the seal is very old and worn or 2) it has been damaged, either when fitting or because of an issue with the crank, e.g. excessive movement or rough surface where the seal runs.

As previously said I would be questioning to quality of AB's workmanship.....

Oil

Hi,when I put my van on the road I used 10 30,I noticed that the oil was slow to pick up.I changed the big ends and oil pump all did not help.On the last oil change I used Semisinthethetic 15 40 and treated with Slik 50.THe oil is still slow to pick up,now I am more patient (ha). The engine runs sweet once the oil is up.I have heard of an oil filter with a one way valve in that should stop the oil from droping.I think hens teeth are easier to find.Cheers+Beers Jim

It could be that the engine has been rebuilt but stood for a long time without running.

Oil leaks

The early Bedfords were known for there oil leaks,so they prodused a liquid that would help stop the leaks by soking into the gasgit and expanding it so to lessen the leak. This is now in Halfords called Stop leak and costs £5.99.Some say it will block your oil ports,it will not.Cheers+Beers,Jim.
