Screeching

My engine turns over and idles fine at the mo but when I press the accelerator it starts to screech. I already have a new alternator and was wondering if there are any other common causes for the screeching like the water pump or anything else that I could swap out at the same time as I change it. Also, if I change the alternator should I put a new belt on as a matter of course. Are there any other things I should do while I'm at it?

Thanks, Nick

First thing to check is the fan belt tension. This is the most likely cause.

Thanks Pete, am I right in thinking it's tensioned by the alternator?

Yes, that's right. If you are fitting a new alternator I would be inclined to fit a new belt anyway.
If the old one is still ok you can have it as a spare.
Don't make the belt bar-tight or you'll damage the alt. bearings etc. You should be able to move it up and down a bit in the middle of the longest run of the belt.
Check it again after a few hundred miles.
