Master cyclinder failure?

Evening all.
Nice to bump in to a few 'Bedford Gathering' T-Shirt wearers at the Pickering Steam fair last week while on holiday, but then things take a turn for the worse. Traveling back from Whitby I had to do a fairly major stamp on the brakes as someone stopped in front of me, then a few miles later noticed more travel in the brake pedal than usual. A few miles more and complete brake failure with the pedal going all the way to the floor. Narrowly avoided traffic and used the grass at the side of the A64 as run off and yanked the handbrake as hard as possible until we stopped safely.... A lift home on the back of the pick up truck and all safely home if not in time to play the cricket match I was racing back for.

Anyway, the question. Can't see any obvious signs of fluid leak, and the servo reservoir is still full, so I'm pretty sure the seals have gone in the master cylinder. Do you agree with that diagnosis, and if so, complete new unit required from ABC, or can a service pack be obtained to fix it myself?

Sounds like the Master Cylinder to me. Is the brake fluid in the resevoir darker than it should be? I understand there are repair kits, but personally would look at a new cylinder if the seals have gone, just in case there is scoring on the cylinder walls. Oddly enough, if it was saturday you were stuck on the A64, I was going along the other way after just buying my CF ..... from bedford!

Yes, pretty dark, but probably been in there for a long time. What would cause it to darken?

master cylinder

Hi Dave, whet's happening is when you push the peddle instead of the seal pushing the fluid it is letting it pass over the seal.So no braks.Cheers+Beers Jim.

All brake fluid absorbs water and over time dissolves older rubber.

Looks like that emergency braking you did has either flipped the seal or just plain worn the seal out. either way you need to replace them .

now for the fun bit as there are more that 1 master cylinder fitted to the Beddys over the years , you need to find out which 1 you have fitted.
Id remove the master cylinder first though and strip it down to inspect the internal bore .

if this is scored you can hone it out if its only slight or if heavy send it to a machine shop to be bored out and a stainless steel insert fitted.
if your going down this rout kits are available form a few sources.

other option is to try source a new unit or a good second hand 1 ..........

new are available but hard to source.

Hi,
My master cylinder failed wile I was in Prague last month and after trying various seal kits etc which proved very difficult as I didn't have a part number for the cylinder I had!
I took the chance and fitted this cylinder to my 1981 Bedford cf 250 last night.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350841646627&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:GB:1123

I had to cut a piece of 10mm bar about 14mm long and inserted it into the end of the cylinder to take up the slack as the pin from the servo wasn't long enough to make the cylinder work!
Works like a dream now!
Marc.

Thanks for the info lads. I'm waiting for a seal kit to arrive (it's a single line system with servo). Does the main seal get fitted to the plunger that comes through the servo? If so, there's no sign of any seal on it, so I guess the old seal is down inside the cylinder having fallen off.... Any ideas how to fish it out?

Well, fixed it myself with a repair kit. All pretty easy once you get it apart - corrosion around the circlip and washer needed clearing to allow the piston out. Otherwise straight forward. Took some photos as a guide:
