Running ruff

Hi Day Triper,Running ruff can be caused by a number of things.Changing the coil to 12volt will not nessasealy clear this up.You need to tell us what's happening and when,in abit of detail if possible.Cheers+Beers,Jim.

i'm no expert but if something works for a while and then stops i would say there is something breaking down, probably as it gets warm.
personally as it was at least running before, i would put it back as it was and just change the points, plugs, condenser, rotor, cap and leads anyway and then start the tune up.

Try a new set of HT leads. If it runs OK when cold but then splutters and dies when warm it could well be a duff king lead - I had this issue. For the money new plugs and coil etc aren't a bad bet either, as then you should get a good few 1000 miles before you need to check anything again.

The dizzy position with regards which lead goes where is immaterial so long as you have the correct plug firing at the correct time. Mine was 90 degrees out but I just adjusted the HT leads accordingly. So long as your firing order is correct don't worry about swapping it back.

you need to go through both the electrical and fuel system systematically..

start looking at all the air pipes as 1 of them could have a split allowing to much air to enter the system.
this will cause the engine to run badly at tick over and very lumpy at other speeds.

next check the carb as a dirty jet will also cause theses symptoms.

if all is well on the fuel side you can progress to the electrics.

earth lead in the dissy needs to be clean and making good contact with both the base plate and body.

are the points and condenser in good condition if in doubt replace.
check the back lash and side movement of the dissy , excess play will give loads of problems.
is the vacuum advance retard system working with in parameters?

rotor arm and cap need to be clean with no sines of tracking.

ht leads can play up . its possible to check this at night time with engine running , if you see some nice blue sparks dashing all over the leads and plugs then replace with new..

check your timing with a strobe light and use color tune to set the fuel mixture.

many thanks for all the replys, will give it all ago, one more quirey, does the coil sit ontop of the engine (seems a daft place as its bound to get cooked) or does it go on the bulkhead? cheers

with conventional set up the coil sits by the side of the carb. and its a 9v one with a balast wire supplying it , there is also a 12v feed to the coil which is only live when the starter is engaged.

the electronic set up uses a 12v coil mounted on the bulk head on top of the ecu. this enables heat dissipation

hi gethin, thanks for the info, would it be just as wise to fit the standard coil on the b/head?
