That'll more than likely be the gm 3 speed then.Have you checked the fluid?
Which engine do you have with it?

IMPORTANT
For satisfactory transmission operation it is essential that utmost cleanliness is observed during all servicing operations.
CHECKING FLUID LEVEL
The transmission dipstick is housed in a filler pipe on the right hand side of the engine.
The fluid level should be checked with the vehicle on a level surface with the engine idling, the selector lever in 'P or 'N' position and the transmission at its normal operating temperature.
Under these conditions the fluid level should be between the 'FULL' and 'ADD' marks on the dipstick.
It is essential that the correct fluid level is maintained otherwise erratic shifting and other malfunctions can occur.
Do not overfill as foaming and ejection of fluid might occur.
Fluid required to bring the level from 'ADD' to 'FULL' is approximately 0.6 litre (1 pint).
To bring a cold transmission to normal operating temperature it is permissible to run the engine at a fast idle for two minutes with 'D' selected. Do not exceed this period otherwise overheating will occur.
For safety reasons it is recommended that the operator is seated in the vehicle throughout the warming up period to ensure that the footbrake is applied and to prevent accidental release of the parking brake.
Before checking the fluid level after transmission overhaul run the engine and move the selector lever through each operating position to ensure that all internal channels are filled.

RECOMMENDED FLUID
Only one of the fluids listed below (or Dexron Fluid 9985158 overseas) should be used.
No additives such as solvents or friction reducing compounds may be added without risk of damage to the transmission.
BP Autran DX
Castrol TQ Dexron 'R'
Duckhams D-Matic or Fleetmatic D
Esso Dexron Automatic Transmission Fluid
Fina Dexron ATF
Gulf Automatic Transmission Dexron
Mobil ATF-220
Shell Automatic Transmission Ruid Dexron
Texamatic 6673 Dexron
Dexron II type generic ATF
