Occasional engine cut out / splutter - carb debris?

Since fitting my new 2.3 petrol lump over the winter the van has been running well, but occasionally starts to splutter as if fuel starved. A quick 20 second stop at the side of the road and she will restart fine and is back to normal. sometimes, even just lifting your foot off for 10sec will cure it.

I'm thinking a bit of junk in the float bowl is getting into the main jet, then floating back down then you stop? Anything else to check - she runs spot on the rest of the time.

2.3 slant with Webber 34ICT and Bosch dizzy.

have you got a clear fuel filter fitted in line as this is a good way of finding out if your engine is been starved of fuel.

dose this occur when going round corners by any chance ...

A good carb clean out should cure any dirt in the carb though .

I always recommend fitting an electric fuel pump either a pusher mounted just above the tank pick up pipe or a sucker mounted on the inner wing ....

Cheers Gethen

Should have mentioned I'm using a Pacet leccy fuel pump at the tank and a Filter King pressure regulator / filter with glass bowl to smooth the pulse from the pump.

The carb was cleaned out and rebuilt when I fitted the engine back in November, and I've probably only done 1000 miles since if that. Maybe I missed a little spec of crap

Why do you ask if its when cornering? I think it actually happens more often when going up hill, but not always. I can't think it could be ignition related.

if it happens when level is less than half tank it could be that the pick up pipe has a hole in its side allowing air to enter the system..

Are you sure that its fuel related??

Gethin - I'm not 100% sure it's fuel, but the fact that it sometimes clears when I take my foot off the accelerator makes me think it is. The only other possible I guess is that the advance in the dizzy sometimes sticks, thus causing incorect timing, and then un-sticks when the revs drop sufficiently. How full the tank is doesn't make any difference, and I inspected the pickup pipe when I cleaned out the tank last year - looked to be OK.

Weird thing is it only does it once every few 100 miles, so I can't see how it would be a setup issue - sometimes it will do it after 10 min driving, and other times after 4 hours on non stop motorway!

Jim - yep, jets are spot on, and the carb is generally in very good condition. she returns up to 25mpg so in general the fuelling can't be too far off.

doubt if it helps [ trying it teach elders to suck eggs and all that ] but when mine was doing that i changed ALL the faul lines [ only from carb ] but changed the in line fuel filter although had to do it twice cos the first one seemed to small BUT it did work and stopped the spluttering .

if this doesnt help phil i hope it helps some one lol
