Running on veg oil Hi anyone else run a diesel cf on used cooking oil . I have been doing this for a couple of years on a 50 50 mix with diesel. You will need to filter it really well I got a filter sock of eBay which works really well takes about 4 days to filter 20 litres . Cheers john---------------------- |

I used to add a litre bottle of fresh vegetable oil to 10 litres of diesel & the lift pump packed up.Somebody told me it probably rotted the rubber seal.It may be that or it might have been on it's way out anyway.I haven't used it since,just in case! ---------------------- |

I haven't had that problem , in fact the only problem I have is the veg oil being a bit thicker the van ticks over more slowly when cold . I get my veg oil free so van is doing about 45 mpg. Cheers john ---------------------- |

I've never tried cooking oil in anything but one of our works vans used to run all the time on transformer oil, which is a mineral oil, without any problems. The guy used to fill drums with diesel on the company card, fill the van with oil and then sell the diesel. He did get sacked in the end. Anyway, the van ran well on mineral oil without any long term problems. I've been told by some workers that Transits work very well too. ---------------------- |

I'm lucky I guess I don't have to resort to underhand tactics like that I just get used oil from our works canteen fryers. I get funny looks from people because it smells of I kid you not burgers and sausages with a slight undertone of chips. But it's free and runs perfect on it . Cheers john ---------------------- |

Hi guy this only works with low pressure injection with no engine management. If your xsara is hdi don't do it you will put your engine management light on and if you are unlucky your injection pump will go south . I ran a pug 205 on it and it was fine. Cheers john ---------------------- |

I have ran a cavalier and 405 on oil. . . . . They didn't like it at all as they were both petrol (joke). At the time I just used to buy the oil from local supermarkets in the 3ltr containers which cost £1.30 ish. Diesel was about 70p+ a ltr so saved about 50%. I was working in Liverpool and driving nearly 200 miles a day so the oil didn't stay in the car long and I always had about 50/50 mix with diesel. In the cooler months I added the odd gallon of unleaded to thin it down more when the oil viscosity was thicker. |

If you are looking at running a PUG on veg oil you need to check which pump you have. If it's a Bosch then you are fine, if it's a Lucas then you will kill it. The Bosch pumps were generally better anyway. The other thing to be careful of is fuel line degradation and fuel pump seals as Bluebedouin said. the veg oil can attack them, so factor in new seals and lines (not a big expense really) |
