Well, The Rockbox failed it's MOT Nothing too major though.Rear brakes binding. Front brake imbalance. Rear shockers. Steering Column top bearing. Shockers are not hard to find, but I'm having a bit of an issue with front brake cylinders (gonna change them both), and I'm having no luck finding a steering column bearing. Any ideas please? ---------------------- |

Take a look here, see if there's anything you recognise. If there is I'll put them up on the auction site.
Price on greedbay seems to be about £7 each so I'd put them up for £10 for the pair start plus postage (about a fiver). ---------------------- |

Thanks Bluebedouin. Believe it or not I've just found a local supplier for the brake cylinders. The Carshop in Guisborough. I think I'm gonna have to try and pack the steering column bearing though. ---------------------- |

Well, the packing failed, but Baileys have one. Should be legal by the end of the week.

I thought the top bearing in the steering colum was actually a bush which you pack with thick oil or greese I remember getting one from Mr Bailey as mine had completely collapsed. Dave ---------------------- |

I tried that, but there was still far to much play in it. Clunked like mad when turning, just though I'd bite the bullet and buy one. ---------------------- |

Top bearing is a ball bearing with a felt oil ring. Bearing can clunk if the thrust spring or split ring (spring seating) are missing - ---------------------- |

Everything is there, but the oil ring isn't too clever. No problem. It's ordered now. Just about to fit new shocks and a couple of other bits and bobs. Looking at that pic though, my split ring is in the wrong place. ---------------------- |

Split ring sits on the bearing inner race so that the bearing is evenly pre-loaded by the spring. If the spring is against the inner race then it doesn't sit squarely against the race. ---------------------- |

Silly question. Which way should the split ring sit? Wide part to the top or bottom? ---------------------- |

Not such a silly question; split ring should be installed wide part uppermost. If you have a Haynes manual then its shown in Fig. 11.30 (which is from the 1978 parts catalogue illustrations I think - nothing comparable in any of the GM manuals). ---------------------- |

I had him out for a short blast this afternoon. Even got it up to 70 on a downhill stretch with a tail wind.
