Back firing problems

Poor Brenda has been running great for the last 18 months, she wouldn't start yesterday, I cleaned up the plugs and away she went. Today I drove a mile and she backfired and now won't start although is backfiring as I try. She was always a 1st time starter. Where will I start my quest for the solution? Thanks Roy

Which engine - OHC (slant Vauxhall) or CIH (upright Opel).

If it's the slant engine then which distributor - Delco (black cap) or Bosch (brown cap).

That'll do to begin with.
