Starter lazy ?? Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone can help me with an issue I have with my 1984 2.3 petrol CF. A couple of times recently I have travelled 4 or 5 miles at good rev's, parked up and come back to the vehicle only to find it won't start. It's as if the battery is about flat (solenoid starts to click etc) yet it is a big battery which I fully charged the other day. I also tried to jump it with another new battery I've got and it was also very lazy and wouldn't go. Luckily at the time I was at a car parts shop, they let me use a big battery they had handy and eventually it went. Amps flow is always positive when driving according to the gauge and the fan belt is new. I actally checked alternator volts the other day, it was about 13.3 at a medium idle. I'm supposed to going away in it on Friday. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Simon. ---------------------- |

Just checked my fully charged 90ah battery, it's dead !!. Checked for leakage and there's about 50ma going somewhere but that's not much I suppose. ---------------------- |

Thanks for the reply. I have swapped the 90ah battery that came with the Ambulance for a smaller brand new one I bought for a diesel corsa two months back. The alternator output seems to be steady at 13.3-13.4 volts regardless of rev's. Regarding the 50ma leakage, when I put the new battery on the ceiling lights came to life. I must've caught the switch whilst moving the seats around ! I'll blame it on the kids though. I really hope it's the battery, I'm off to Dent on Friday............Cheers. ---------------------- |

13.3-13.4V is a bit low unless the battery is flat; ought to be about 14-14.5V when engine running at a fast idle. Starter lazy when hot can indicate worn brushes, excessive armature end float, damaged commutator or a combination. ---------------------- |

When I first read this I also thought your 13.3v reading was on the low side so I've just run ours and it reads 14.7v on a 1/4 choke ( I couldn't rev it has I'm alone at the moment, ohh the pleasures of seclusion). Our battery is around 5 years old I had it second hand for free when someone upgraded theirs. I have however changed our Alternator to a 60amp, as the original was a bit weak. If you do have a current leak, you could consider fittng an isolater, as I had one once and its a good back up whilst you trace the fault if it takes a while, the one I got was like the one on the link below. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-BATTERY-ISOLATOR-ISOLATION-CUT-OFF-SWITCH-KEY-WATERPROOF-CARAVAN-SH9-/270984894337?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3f17f55781 ---------------------- |

waynjac wrote: you could consider fittng an isolater Sound suggestion - plastic isolator with red key is good for security too because the key can be removed when the isolator is switched off. Not suitable for diesel engines though ... plastic body can melt. ---------------------- |

Thanks to you both for the info'. Looks like a new/recon starter and alternator in the not too distant future. I can confirm the leakage is now nothing since I found the roof light switch on ! There is a battery isolator switch in the drivers side step, though I've not looked to see if I can remove the key yet. You've hit the spot with the starter I reckon, it definately doesn't turn over as well when it's warm. I just want it to get me and the Wife to Dent and back tomorrow and then I've some time to play with. Cheers. ---------------------- |

My starter had very similar problems. A replacement set of brushes has completely transformed it. £4.50 plus an hours work to remove, replace & refit. See my recent post about this containing some excellent advice from Phil. You will need a powerful soldering iron preferably a gas one. I used a turboflame lighter and that did the job well (the plumbers friend). |

That sounds good to me, thanks for the info'. I might just tackle the starter as my first job once I've got this weekend out of the way. ---------------------- |

We made it there and back with no major problems. I have never had to drive through so much water in my life but the bus never missed a beat. The clutch is slipping more than it was before though so that's another for the list. I was toying with taking her down to Billing but i'll have to leave it for this year. Starter motor first job. ---------------------- |
