If the van is a CF2 (1984-7) with upright Opel engine then the crankshaft rear oil seal can be replaced after removing the flywheel, i.e. remove gearbox & clutch. If the van is a Facelift (CF2 front up to 1984) with slant Vauxhall engine (like scoobydoo's van) then the crankshaft has to be removed, i.e. remove engine. Howto for either not done yet but you'll get some idea of what's involved for the slant engine from Char lottie's cooked engine, bottom end build. ---------------------- |

OUCH that looks like one hell of a job Gulp. i spoke to an old guy that is on the ball with these engines he said if engine left to stand for a while like mine had, Put some seal swell in the oil and run it up to heat apparently the graphite rope goes flat and seal swell and running up to temp fixes it. Guess what it did

Seal swell working on rope seals is a new one on me; I thought it was for nitrile & other elastomer seals. Which version did you use? ---------------------- |

the tin is around somewere i will have a look today, According to the sea of knowledge i spoke to ,He said when a cf slant engine is left to stand the weight of the crank flywheel etc etc lays obviously on the seal it will leave an indentation were it has been at rest in my case for a year. the kind gent said that if i ran her up and use the engine gently and add a swell agent in the oil it should and it did
Im not questioning how or why but it worked YiPPeee |

OIL SEAL You are never too old to learn! very usefull information indeed, I've recently rebuilt my 'slant' so it should last me out. further to my blog re my gear box, I located another ZF4only £50! it is a great improvement, however, there is a malfunction with the reverse-light mechanism. The light remains on whatever gear is engaged, I removed the switch, and works ok by 'hand'.Maybe that's why he sold it, I'm thinking about attaching an alternative switch to the gear stick.---------------------- |
