getting it right timing
hi guy's
i could do with a little help or advice please , i have gone through the help sections of the site and gone through Haynes manual to try and sort this out.
i have set the timing to tdc piston to top, crank pulley to mark, auxiliary and cam pulley line up with each other dizzy to number 1 lead ...
when it starts runs like bag of bones for want of a better word even with strobe adjust to 9%before Tdc adjust dizzy to full capacity towards cab and it runs ok put strobe on it and it sets on 9 o'clock please tell me what i have done wrong and why its not lining up on timing marks as it should
thanks

If the auxiliary shaft pulley mark is a round depression like on the camshaft pulley then that's the likely problem.
Auxiliary shaft pulley should be timed on a V mark for the distributor to land right.
Some pulleys had a V mark one side and a round mark the other. The fix is to remove the pulley then refit it with the V mark facing outwards.
Auxiliary shaft pulley removal can be tricky; it may bump off using a plastic or rubber mallet but if the pulley won't budge then the auxiliary shaft may pull out.
Alternative is to install a 3/8-inch UNF x 2 inch long bolt in the end of the shaft and bump that towards the shaft while supporting the pulley at the back, e.g. with a piece of wood long enough to use as a lever against the front of the crankcase.
Also check camshaft pulley for a V mark on the back if there isn't a V mark on the back of the auxiliary shaft pulley - pulleys are inter-changeable.
Camshaft pulley usually can be bumped off using a plastic or rubber mallet.
This is what things should look like when timing to V and round marks & using TDC mark on crankcase -
In this position the distributor install then should drop right, i.e. No 1 firing, rotor contact pointing towards camshaft and flange securing bolt/s roughly in the middle if the adjuster slot/s (Bosch & Delco distributors).
Incidentally, ignore through holes in pulley webs - they're for balancing so could be anywhere in the web & even not there at all.

With crankshaft at TDC, align camshaft pulley round mark & auxiliary shaft pulley V mark with centres of pulley bolts.
I use a bit of baler twine pulled taut but anything with a straight edge will do - only has to be accurate enough for cambelt to fit nicely.
Once the belt is tensioned, rotate crankshaft 2 full turns then check alignment of camshaft & auxiliary shaft pulleys at TDC. Should be the same but sometimes one or the other can be out by 1 tooth.
If that's the case then slacken & remove belt then move only the offending pulley to align. Check again after rotating crankshaft 2 full turns.
If belt timing is ok & you can set the distributor for No 1 firing at 9 degree BTDC (crankshaft pulley mark/pointer aligned with cambelt cover lower mark) then check ignition leads order: 1 - 3 - 4 - 2 anti-clockwise around the cap.
If that's ok & it's a Delco (contact breaker) ignition system then try a new condenser & also new points if the contact faces have started to blacken - non-Delco condensers aren't too reliable & when they pack in the points can suffer quite quickly.

I had a simular problem with my camper, although it was running pretty good I had no adjustment to tweak the timing. On taking off the cambelt cover I realized something was wrong as I had a dimple on each pulley on further investigation I found the auxilary pulley had been put on the camshaft the wrong way around. After correcting this I now have adjustment to tweak the igniton timing,
Dave
