Advice on whether to buy cf pls!!

Hi I am thinking of buying a 1984 cf ambulance converted to camper. it has a diesel engine in it and a fibreglass body. I am not a mechanic and wondering about any advice on whether I should buy or not, need something that's going to be reliable for festivals and not too costly to maintain. Any advice really appreciated

You have come to the right place for advice. I would say that with any purchase if you can take a friend with you to view, that will help with the decision. Things you need to look at are how long has it been standing if at all - all older vehicles benefit from being used, as it stops the joints seizing up. Rust can be an issue on CFs. Places to look for are around the windscreen, inside the door shuts underneath the windscreen, the front wheel arches (rocker panels) again under the windscreen. Also chassis rails under the van. Front doors have a tendency to rust along the bottom, but are a relatively easy repair if caught early. You should be lucky with a converted ambulance though due to the fibreglass body.
Reliability on mine is good engine wise - although mine is petrol. There are several diesel models, I am sure someone else on here can talk you through the variations on those and what they are like for spare parts and reliability. I am sure they are good though as they were used a lot in Ice Cream Vans which are designed to be run for a long time.
General spares are still available in some motorfactors, but there is a list on the site for other specialist suppliers for the harder to get parts.
Insurance should be relatively affordable - again see the site for an idea of who to go with.
In general mine has cost me about £300 per year to keep on the road, if that helps at all. I do my own oil changes and servicing though.
I hope this doesn't put you off too much, as they are really good vans in general and I wouldn't go back to Volkswagens if you paid me!

Ambulances on CF chassis normally have petrol engines (& often automatic transmission but not always).

If the diesel engine has been a conversion from petrol then it can be a good thing if done properly but equally can be a disaster if it's been bodged.

Can you obtain the chassis number and some photos around the engine?

Chassis number starts 97- and should be on the V5 registration document if there's no ID plates attached to metalwork in the cab or under the bonnet.

If you're not familiar with uploading from photo hosting sites then you can email photos to me (email address in my Profile under this message box) and I'll post them here.
