Battery light flickering.

Hi.
I have a little problem with my beddie, the battery light keeps flickering while i'm driving, I have had the alt. off and tested and been told there's nothing wrong with it, so then I tightened the belts up and was ok for about 200 mile and started again and is still doing it now. I'm a bit worried I will be stuck somewhere, so I would like to get to the bottom of the problem. Anyone got any idea's.

More than likely its the fuse-box or ignition switch it self.

A bad contact will cause the bulb to flicker as it looses its 12v feed.

Hi Gethin.
What can I do about that, or how do I sort it.

first of all check the bulkheads connections for furring.
then have a look at the fuse-box to see if any of the terminals and fuses have got any furring or corrosion even burning terminals.

switch can be cleaned with a good switch cleaner but let it dry before connecting any power back up.......

Gethin, you might have put your finger on it but if I remember correctly Derrick's van has CF2 wiring with no bulkhead connector. CF2 engine wiring has a 9-pin connector though & it can throw up faults.

Connector is located in the harness over the top of the engine; it's a round plug & socket thing with a rubber sleeve over the join.

Terminals might need cleaning; likeliest ones are for the thick brown wires (supply to the dash wiring) or the thin brown+yellow wires (alternator warning lamp).

Socket terminal for the thick brown wire also might need closing up a bit to grip the plug terminal better but if the terminals are that bad then the fuel shut-off solenoid will chatter or shut off completely when the alternator warning lamp flickers. (Similar thing with petrol models when ignition supply affected.)

With a bit of luck all that may be needed is for the plug & socket to be separated then pushed together again if the terminals inside look ok. Rubber sleeve needs to go back over the join but if it's perished then use duct tape to keep out water.

EDIT

Disconnect battery if plug & socket need levering apart - thick brown wires permanently 'live'...

Battery light flickering

Hi Guys.
Only just got to have a look today, cleaned of terminals and altered tension on alt. belt, seems to have stopped flickering, but not took it for a spin as yet. My alt belt is adjusted to the max, so I will need to get two new belts, can anyone tell me what size I will need.
Thanks
Derrick
PS. Phil told me some time ago, but I was unable to find the email with that info on it.

Alternator belt should be 900mm (e.g. Quinton Hazell QBA900).
