Warm wheels... or wheel.

Just (another) quick query for the CF sages...

On return from the Shropshire meet I did a quick walk around to feel the tyres & wheels.... mostly thinking it might highlight any pressure imbalance but also realised i could feel the hub caps for temperature.

I noticed the rear left wheel was significantly warmer than the rear right. Coincidentally (or not), this is the side we changed the cylinder on last year. After that we tweaked the adjusters on both sides, passed the MOT retest ok & did the trip to tenby & back (ish!) without noticing (or checking) any problem with ther brakes.

Need to readjust the brakes ?
Need to get around to changing the cylinder on the other side ?
Or a symptom of something else (i.e. wheel bearing) ?

Tah...

Sticking handbrake cable or lever on the brake shoe more likely if the hydraulics ok.

Either way should show up with wheels off the ground.

Sorry to be dense but to avoid a repeat exercise...

I can lift the back axle & spin the wheels.. and presumeably confirm (excess?) drag.
Check for bearing play ?
Maybe even see about disconnecting the handbrake cable and repeat... anything more i can do to fault find or prove either way ?

Quickest way to check whether the brakes are free is to see whether the van rolls easily on a slight incline, or rolls to a stop from low speed without feeling like the brakes are on.

This doesn't always show up sticking brakes though; better to lift the wheels off the ground & check for drag at each wheel. Slacken wheel nuts first in case you have to go on to the next stage.

Best way is to remove the brake drums & check the position of the handbrake levers on the trailing shoes -

and also check that the cylinder isn't sticking by levering between the shoes & backplate to move the cylinder pistons both ways.

If the lever isn't as in the picture or won't return there with the cable adjustment slackened off then remove the shoes both sides and detach the cables from the backplates so that the inner cables can be pulled through the outer cables.

If cable/s are hard to pull through then that's enough to cause brake drag.

If either cable is frayed then it's time for a new one.

If the cables are just rusty then clean them up and lubricate with Keenol or similar water resistant white grease and work the inner cables to and fro until they're free in the outer cables.

While the shoes are off, make sure that the levers on the trailing shoes are free and lubricate the pivots with Keenol.

When reassembling, leave handbrake cable adjustment slack while adjusting the brake shoes then adjust cable to lock the wheels initially at 5 clicks of the handbrake lever.

Final cable adjustment is best done after the brakes have bedded in again after being disturbed and the shoes have been re-adjusted.

Got around to a quick check today.... rear axle jacked on axle stands.

The suspect wheel definitely sounded like it was dragging at a few points as i span it.
Yanking on the hand brake cable underneath it appeared both sides pulled through & returned by the same amount.
I backed off the adjuster on the suspect wheel (8 notches) until it span freely.

Applied hand brake, suspect side still turned a little, opposite side locked.
Made a couple more firm handbrake applies now both locked (assume cable sorting itself out after adjuster change).

With handbrake released the suspect wheel was dragging again.
So seems to point at handbrake still.... which means going to the next staeg above.... not sure when mind
