12 volt electrics

Hi everyone, To relate this to a Bedford CF to be within the rules, this is about the cigar lighter plug. Can the wiring from this plug be connected incorrectly? What I want to do is put in a small 2 pin wafer type caravan type socket wired to a female cigar lighter plug, which then I can plug the male end into, that is fitted to our new small TV. We tried this in 2003 and goodbye small TV. Brian.

The centre of the plug should be positive and the outer negative.

Unless the caravan sockets have either different size plugs or positioned so they cannot be fitted the wrong way....then I'd not use them.............

Why not use just the round plug with a fuse in its nose.

Use a good power socket and plug not them cheep 99p ones as they will burn out in no time......

Fit a 15amp fuse between the centre terminal and the battery as well.

Then fit the plug with the correct fuse for what your using.

Dont use extension leads but fit power sockets where you need them all fused and switched if you want........

The TV mite be saved if its got the reverse protection diode fitted, this can be replaced for a few quid though and you should not use the TV with out it or you will permanently damaged the TV .................

The caravan sockets have plugs that are angled such that they can only be inserted one way round. it usually says on the inside of the socket (when you are wiring it up) which is plus and which is minus. As getthen said, the inner pole of a normal ciggy socket is the +ve.

The older ones had 2 identical slits or round pins though.......
