Thinner gaskets can be made to work if the cover edges aren't distorted.

There is a trick to it.

1. The 4 studs should be along the intake manifold side.

2. Clean gasket face of camshaft housing (the alloy bit).

3. Spray new gasket on one side with carpet glue and allow glue to tack dry according to can instructions.

4. Stick gasket to camshaft housing and hold in place using nuts on the studs and 4 bolts along the exhaust side.

Ensure that gasket is positioned correctly before glue grabs enough to prevent movement -

5. When glue has cured enough for the gasket to stay where it is, clean gasket face of cover & smear with grease then install cover but only fit the nuts on the intake side and nip up finger tight. Take care to avoid trapping cambelt cover top bracket (top photo) under cover.

6. Using a suitable tool, lever cover into position so that the 4 bolts can be fitted on the exhaust side, starting with the middle 2 bolts -

7. When all bolts finger tight, progressively tighten nuts & bolts using a short ring spanner.

Do not over-tighten nuts and bolts past the point where the gasket is evenly compressed.

After the engine has reached normal operating temperature, re-tighten nuts and bolts without over-tightening past the point where the gasket is evenly compressed.

If thin gasket still won't seal then look for Payen JM550 (comes film wrapped on distinctive blue & white striped card).

They're as thick as original GM gaskets so will last a while & still are available from Payen through decent motor factors or engine reconditioners.

Same installation procedure for using Payen gasket.

Also take the breather pipe off and make sure its clean and not blocked because a blocked or part blocked breather will cause it to leak (past experience).
