It's that time again

Thanks to the help you gave last year i managed to keep the old girl going through to winter. After a winter of standing at the farm doing nothing i find my self in exactly the same position as this time last year.

She starts easily and runs beautifully ( well not bad anyway), however something is stuck again and i cant get her in gear after starting. Last year it only took a couple of goes of starting her in gear to free it and that was my only problem in a year.

Sadly its the same story today but the outcome is not as good. I spent a good 30 mins trying to start her in gear today but no joy. She does try and then has a little lurch forward but its not freed itself this time.

Im going to try again tomorrow because i dont want to give up on her yet but am i wasting my time ? Is there anything else i can do ? I cant believe i may have to give up on her now when the engine is running so well . No good if you can't drive her though

Thanks

Karrie

Hi you could try jacking the back wheels up so that thay donot touch floor and suport on good stands. then start in gear, and if it runs then depress the clutch an hit the brake pedel hard this mite unstick the clutch.
hop this helps

Check the clutch cable free play adjustment if there is any slack at the pedal.

Look under the cab floor -

Relay lever connects the clutch cable to the adjuster rod.

Gap A should be 2.5mm with the spring unhooked.

Big adjuster nut is 13/16" AF; locknut is 1/2" AF.

If adjusting the play reduces pedal slack then there'll be more chance of shocking the clutch centre plate free from the flywheel.

Armed with a sense of humor and some print outs of the pictures i confidently started looking for the part. I think i may have now located it by looking under the cab behind the wheel but I'm not sure.

I have taken a few pictures of what i think i need to check and i would appreciate it if you could let me know if i am at least looking at the correct part.

That's it.

If you're slim enough then you should be able to wriggle under the van to get at the adjuster without having to jack up & support the front of the van.

Scrub the crud off with a wire brush so that you can see what's what.

Today is the day that i am going to try and get underneath the old girl and see if i can make a difference. I have gathered all that i need and when the fog lifts i shall make my way down to the farm and give my best shot. Keep everything crossed for me :)

Clutch

Everything crossed Karrie! Have you managed to raise the front end to give you more working space?

I haven't been able to lift her but i think its very likely thats going to have to be the next thing i do.

I did get underneath her but i couldn't do much as it was quite difficult trying to actually get two hands to the bits i needed to and there isn't much room to maneuver under her. I will be trying again but i need to clear away a few more nettles first (ouch) .

I have had to take the battery off again to charge as it keeps draining when i have to keep trying to start her. It does feel rather like if i could just get a big enough oomph behind me i could shock the clutch again, i have tried keeping the jump leads on but each time the lorry lurches they move and eventually come away.

Anyway why have one problem when you can have three, i now have a leaky rad and one of the braces around the petrol tank has given up. Neither of those things worry me to much as i can sort them without too much trouble but unless i can release the clutch I'm not going to bother.

Just to prove i have been under here's a link to some very bad pictures i tried to take when underneath

Whoop Whoop

Both clutch and myself well and truly shocked and we are rockin and rollin again ...yippee.

Had to get a bit of help to jack her up as my Jack is a complete waste of space and i shall be purchasing a new one later today.

We got her off the ground and she started in gear straight away, i slammed the brake on and she seemed ok , removed the jack but she wasn't having a bar of it so had to get her back up again. I shocked her a few times but i still only had first, shocked her twice in 2nd for good measure and she was free.

The sheep were running today so i only had a small place to drive her in but managed to get use of all but 4th gear.

So now i am at least mobile and can get her off the farm so can hopefully get her somewhere to get help with my other issues if i have too.

Thanks to all....

Well done Karrie.

Next time you lay up the van, get in the habit of charging the battery every month or two (off the van is best) & at the same time fire up the engine so that you can slip the clutch to polish off the rust that sticks the centre plate to the flywheel & clutch cover...
