Engine turn over very slowly but only when air is cold

Hi folks
the title nearly says it all. It's weird. When the ambient air temperature is cool it cranks very slowly as if the battery is discharged (it isn't) and I mean very slow i.e. every 1-2 seconds. It takes several attempts to fire up but it always does. Once it's warmed up it cranks over as normal. It's also fine on a warmish day even it's not been started for days.
There is a definite link between the air temp and the slow cranking.
Any ideas???????

Tony

Sounds like the it could be the starter-motor bearings or field insulation braking down.

Have you tried another starter on ??

The other cause could be that the oil is to thick,
When was the last time you gave the old girl a dam good service...
Old oil will be much thicker and contain loads of extra carbon and dirt.....

I don't have another starter but I'll keep my eye out for one. Even if that's not the problem it doesn't hurt to have a few spares around.
The oil has been fully drained, new filter etc and few miles done on it. It looks ok on the dipstick as well so I'm fairly sure it's not just poor maintenance of that.

Just a thought. I'm under the van at the weekend to fit a new exhaust and give it a general service. Is the starter an item I can usefully overhaul or is it a replacement item?

If you look in Phil's How to section it shows you how to do the job....

My transit engine is exactly the same. Combination of viscous oil when cold and poor wiring (still the original Bedford wiring for a 2.0 slant - not man enough to deal with the massive 600A cranking current). Shouldn't be an issue if it's the original engine though - weak starter is probably a good call.
