Victor 4/90 gearbox with O/D on a CF?
For those with a bit of know how about the old vivas etc, would a 4 speed box from a 4/90 with overdrive (taken from a 2.3 slant engine, 1972-76 I believe) work well on a CF?
Thinking the main issues would be:
gear ratios
Propshaft flange (different to that of a CF with OD?)
gear stick position
Did they use a GM box like the stock 4 speed on a CF1, as if so I could swap over my internals.

Can put Victor internals into a CF main casing to keep the CF gear shift turret; basically the same box apart from mainshaft (output shaft) for overdrive.
Also can swap cogs to keep CF intermediate ratios (later boxes with oil seal in front bearing).
Flange yoke on the propellor shaft is best on a CF; sleeve yoke will work ok though.

Thats great, thank Phil. So, if I have a good GM 4 speed, an easier route might then be to swap the output shaft from my 4 speed to the victors and then attach overdrive unit to my box - thus saving swapping all the internals over?

Output shaft replacement is a complete gearbox strip.
Shaft with gears on can be swapped if the gear sets match but it's near enough a full strip anyway.
PS
To avoid confusion -
Slant engine SWB models usually have the Vauxhall 4-speed box & Laycock J type overdrive only fits this one.
GM box can be the Opel one with similar side gear shift (usually on later CF1 with Opel diesel in GB) or single rail (Fillipino) with top turret as used on early CF2.

Hi Phil,
Im doing exactly the same thing, having got a J type od with a victor box on- but have not made much progress of late cos its been too dark in my shed! Once swapped, its a case of finding the right propshaft- Id like to find a two piece one, but that could take some time. I must admit the whole thing has been much much harder so far than I anticipated, but Ive not played with gearboxes before!

Hello Mike,
It's only the front bit that you need to change. If you want to climb under my van, with a measuring stick, at the next meet I certainly wouldn't have a problem.

Hello Mike,
Yes, this one has a Laycock in it. It's predecessor had the 5 speed type 9: I still can't work out which one I prefer. Certainly the switch from fourth to fifth, without doing anything more than moving your thumb, is an added bonus.

Oh the joys of tinkering ay. I've not bought this box yet, will have to see how much money is required before I commit to even MORE work I don't really have time for!
Thank you for all the replies. Nice to know I wasn't completely mad when I came up with the idea.

No, but a ZF 5-speed with 0.8:1 5th ('overdrive') should be a straight swap for ZF 5-speed with 1:1 5th.
