Gear lever

Hi all.

My gear lever seems very loose and was wondering if there is any adjustment inside the gearbox or any parts that can be changed?
This might just be how they are but mine seems to want to select reverse when selecting first gear. There is a very slight resistance when pushing the gear stick across to reverse but not much!

Cheers,
Stilly.

What gearbox is in it mate?Mine has a zf 5speed and reverse is where first gear would be and first is where second would be and so on until you reach 5th gear which is right over to the driver and back.

Assuming a Vauxhall 4-speed gearbox with gear lever turret on the side (usual on slant engine), the gear lever ball sits between 2 seatings (plastic washers), No. 5, under the big ring nut, No. 6, in the top of the gear lever turret; washers may be worn out if tightening the nut doesn't reduce gear lever slop.

1. Rubber anti-rattle ring
2. Lock tab
3. Flat washer
4. Spacer ring
5. Seating
6. Ring nut

ABC in Leeds do a kit but hard nylon tubing cut into washers can be somewhat less expensive.

Reverse detent spring resistance may be more apparent when gear lever slop is reduced; it isn't a lot anyway.

Thanks for the info. Mine is the 4 speed gearbox.
My boss at work is a bit older than me and used to work on these vans years ago and he thinks the gear lever is fine! Perhaps its just me being used to modern cars!
I shell take a look and see what I find.
