Black Water leakage ?

(changed thread title as seems it may be a coolant issue)

hi

after managing to resolve another alternator wiring fault today (hooray) i then noticed that there is now a slight oil/water leak to deal with (boooo
!)

oily water (think it may just be oil though ?) seems to be oozing out from somewhere near the front of the engine and then is being flicked all over the place by the belts / fan - not a lot, but enough to show me something's not right

so far, i've found wet patches here:

1. on the underneath of the brake servo
2. on the breather pipe that goes from brake servo into engine
3. on the radiator hose that comes out of bottom of engine (near alternator)
4. a bit on the dizzy cap
5 some on the underneath of the main air intake / filter housing
6. an area/ line of general spatters on the floor near front of engine, underneath the fans/belts, and around the inside of the bonnet

there's a little bit of creaming on the oil filler cap (which i've seen before with this van and think is just due to stop/start / condensation) , but the dipstick is clean, so i'm really hoping it's not the head gasket.

last proper journey we did was about 105 miles on motorway and all seemed ok then on temp gauge / no power loss

(van did breakdown on way home from this trip, but this just seemed to be due to flat battery due to no alternator charge)

engine starts ok and seems to run happily, but as said, is now spitting what looks like it might be oil / oily water

oil level on dipstick appears to have dropped a little , but we haven't used the van much over last 6 months, so i have no idea how long this leak may have been present.

i can't currently see obviously where it's coming out from

any advice with diagnosis / leak location would be very welcome

thanks in advance

Mark

First guess is a leak in the radiator leading to spatter thrown about by the radiator fan; antifreeze in the coolant will seem sticky and sometimes shiny as it dries out.

Oil leakage from the front of the engine tends to run down the front of the crankcase, likewise coolant leaking from the water pump, but if the cam belt cover is missing then the fan will tend to spread leakage about.

Some clean cardboard on the ground under the front engine will help distinguish between coolant & oil leakage after warming up the engine.

thanks for the quick response Phil

i spotted this as i had a plastic tarp under the van, with a bit of cardboard to lie on on top of it

after the engine had run for a few minutes only , it was later spotted that there was some 'black water' sitting on the tarp, and some also soaked into the cardboard

the liquid also tasted slightly sweet , so i initially thought it may have been water/antifreeze , but also feels a bit slippery /slimey to touch so it then got me worrying about oil

i did also notice that the rad level seemed to be a bit low (about 1/2 litre) , so another sign that this could just be a cooling system leak.

radiator itself seems fairly dry , but the pipe at the bottom of the engine / near alternator did seem to be the wettest part i could see, and was the first place that was that was noticeably wet , plus you can see a little bit of fluid movement there when the engine's running , so hopefully this maybe even be just a slight split in that pipe.

cam belt cover is missing, so that could explain why it's getting spread about so much, but i was surprised by the amount of it that seemed to have made its way upwards

i'll have a closer look at the water pump / rad / hoses tomorrow if the weather holds out

on closer inspection in proper daylight , it looks like it may well be the bottom rad pipe.

(sincerely hoping that's all it is)

guess it may have got 'disturbed' too much during recent alternator replacement

let's see what happens when i change that then

thanks to Phil for steering me in the right direction yet again

Tips

Warm up the engine so that the bottom hose softens a bit so that it's easier to detach from the radiator but let the engine cool down some so that coolant that comes out doesn't scald.

Check hose clip first: might not tighten properly if it's gone rusty.

Detach hose from elbow on engine first: can make it easier to detach hose from radiator without straining the radiator spigot.

If the hose seems to be ok then look closely at the radiator spigot: check for cracking in the solder join to the bottom tank.

Small crack can be sealed temporarily using solids-free cooling system sealer (e.g. Wynns - follow bottle destructions!) but larger cracks usually need re-soldering (radiator removed) especially if the spigot isn't rigid in the tank. Small crack will grow eventually ...

If hose & radiator spigot seem to be ok then check for leakage above the spigot: coolant collecting on the bottom of the core (top of bottom tank) usually is an indication of a core leak.

well......i've just changed the bottom pipe, filled up, started up.

it's still leaking coolant.

still couldn't tell where it's coming from with the engine running , but when i switched the engine off i got a load of drips coming straight down from behind the main fan / pulley

so i'm now guessing it's the water pump ?

as this is a 1983 cf2 'facelift' model with the viscous fan, i'm also presuming that it will need a straight replacement part rather than a repair ?

With the cam belt cover missing you should be able to see a hole in the water pump body from underneath; coolant will dribble from this hole if the water pump seal is leaking.

Seal will tend to leak if the radiator cap is removed (system cold) or after stopping the engine (system pressurised).

Pump will need replacing if the seal won't sort itself out after a bit of use (sometimes it will if the pump bearing isn't worn & van has been standing a while); pump repair needs a kit (rare) & a puller or press.
