Key broken in barrel

1. Does anyone know how to get the end of a snapped bit of key out of the ignition barrel?

2. Does anyone know which specification screws I will need to re-affix the metal ignition barrel casing back on to the steering column? The heads of the two bolts/screws are sheared off (as per description in the Haynes manual), so I have to drill them out to get the ignition barrel off and out of the die-cast casing. Once I've done that and pulled the bare ignition barrel out (and hopefully got the pesky bit of key out) I'll need to firmly re-affix the ignition barrel casing (the die-cast two piece cuff that goes round the steering column, not the plastic casing) back to the steering column... so I'll need the right screws/bolts to do that.

Any advice welcome

Hi Tim,before drilling, try a centre punch and tap round the edge of sheared bolts, that way if they come out and you get broken key removed, you can source same thread bolts and replace,i`ve had to do it numerous times on different locks when i worked in garage, 99% successful.

Ah, nice call Alex. I'll definitely try that. I wasn't looking forward to drilling them out. Knowing me I'd sneeze and fall out of the footwell halfway through drilling, making the holes the size of Chepstow castle as I went.

Once you have the two halves of the key, most key cutters worth their salt can grind you a new one from the bits- if you can find the right blank key?!

When I first got the van I got a spare cut straight away. It took an age to find someone who carried the correct blank.

So fortunately, I do have a spare key... I just need to get the old one out. I might try to weedle it out as per that video (Cheers Mikeyboy) before trying Alex's centre punch removal of the sheer-headed bolts.

All good fun this int it. My van is solid as a rock. Reliable as anything. never lets me down.

My key though.... about as robust as a pensioner's pelvis.

If you cant find picks, its possible to use abused paperclips.
Tim, theyre probably stronger than your key!

But I love the bit in the video where he smacks the key about to break it.
He must be a restless soul. Can't sit still, but no jobs need doing. I know, I'll MAKE a JOB by BREAKING something. Must have been taught by the same engineer as I was...

i know you would have to be real careful but i remember some one putting up on here a super glue /baking powder formula maybe try that by glue something to the end of the stuck key .......not the greatest idea but hey you never know
