Diff's & Axles

Looking at the history page & a few other posts like:

http://www.bedfordcf.co.uk/mboard/thread.php?id=10455

There are a number of diff ratio's. I'm just wondering what the diff to axle relationship is?

Are some heavy duty "Salsbury" type axles?

Are the diff's from the non Salsbury axles interchangeable or are there multiple variants of axle through the years?

Thanks in advance,
Finn

basically there are 2 different axles and they are not interchangeable.

The ratios are limited and if you want to get a decent high speed then you will need a Cresta diff fitted to the standard Beddy axle

Whilst on the subject of ratios, are there any options for my 350 axle as I'd like to have a ratio more suited to motorways

A 350 axle is not meant for motorway cruising.

Some have a low ratio to carry heavy goods with a top speed of 60mph.

Some Amby's had a high ratio but even then with a 3.3 engine they could hardly exceed the speed limit.

I've just done a little bed time reading care of the Haynes manual and it would seem that (according to Haynes anyway):

The SWB (97100 & 97300) had either a 8/37 (4.625:1) or 7/37 (5.286:1). I'll punt that these two are interchangeable with one another?

The LWB (97500 & 97700) had either 11/49 (4.454:) or 9/47 (5.222:1). I'll take another punt that these are interchangeable with one another?

My research indicates the Cresta diff is 11/38 (3.454:1). I'll further punt that these are interchangeable with the SWB type diff?

I'm feeling rather lucky, so I'll take yet another punt. The SWB & LWB type diffs are not interchangeable with each other?

How did I do?

Your correct,

The difference with the Cresta diff is that the nose cone is longer so you need to shorten the prop.

If you could find 2 different diffs of the same axle then on the LWB you could get a 11/47 (4.272:1)
