1981 cf250 cavalier camper

On a whim, and because it looked very funky, I have bought a 1981 cf250 2.3 petrol camper van.

I have absolutely no experience with Bedfords, and would like to ask if there are any particular things I should be checking other than the usual.

eg any particular points on the vehicle where they are susceptible to rusting, common faults with electrics etc.

Thanks in advance

Rob

Hi Rob,

Welcome to the fold. I have not had my first cf for too long yet either but as i have been doing the work on her i have to date noticed:

1) all 4 corners of the van on top and inside of the roof guttering have rusted through and been repaired (badly) by the previous owner with a mixture of putty and what i believe to be silicone and then over painted.
2)passenger side arch has gone, due to water exiting the gutter, running down the inside on the door and into the arch. To remedy i have taken out and moved the exit from the gutter to run down the front window.
3)Not sure what type of camper yours is but mine a "pop top" with a sort of canvas wall, check the seal where it meets the van all round, mine again had been "bodged" with putty and silicone and has to a small degree trapped moisture and rusted the roof surrounding the canvas. This is on my list for this winter.
4) strip out your cab are roof lining, mine took about an hour to do and i found the insulation had rotted away to nothing leaving allot of rust due to the previous owner backing the insulation he used with a non breathable vinyl material he must of just had lying around. not good, so i have stripped it back to metal, rust treated and zinc primed it.

Just a few things i would check if i was you. Rust is a problem with vans of this age, but easily fixed if you take your time and do the preparation properly.

Im sure someone will be along shortly to point out anything i may of missed.

Regards
Gaz

Thanks GazVan .

Mine has a fiberglass high top which holds a double bed. I saw that there was rust around the gutter, around the front window and the bottom of the drivers door.

It has had previous work done, but I think it was rushed rather than bodged. I've got 6 months test and 12 months tax, so it is going to be a working project for the next 6 months, then the serious resto work will begin. I've noticed the usual earth fault on the rear light binnacle that is so common on pre 1990 vehicles, and sillies like the odd bulb out.
I picked it up today and drove it home to Middlesbrough from Scarborough. It drives pretty well and gets up to around 55mph OK but I think I'll be changing the points, condenser and plugs sooner rather than later, as there seems to be an irregular misfire at that speed.

There has once been a fixed awning fitted and the gutter on the passenger side has been cut to accommodate it. Do any of you know if the gutter can be completely removed or would I be better of rebuilding it?

I'm not 100% certain but I think the gutter is where the (standard metal) roof is welded to the body (side panels)

I imagine it will be. Same as the mini. People used to deseam those so it is possible, but on second thoughts, the size of a CF and the fact that I have a big fiberglass top fixed to it means it would probably be unwise.

Found quite a few holes on either side of the rear end behind the bumpers and up the panels by the back doors. Not going to be as easy as I hoped. Getting there though.

its common for them to rust by the hinges, you can cut out the outer panel and replace, there are plates behind the panels to take the hinge screws so all is not lost.

Bad news is that the rust around the windscreen means I have to take it out, but I've nowhere dry to keep the van securely while I do this. Gonna have to spend some coin and get an expert in. I've got a new rubber which is a start.

Also, I'm gonna have to source 4 new barrels for the door locks and a connecting piece (between the barrel and the lock) for the hinged side door. It looks like it should be the same as the front passenger door though.

5-ward lock barrels in metal door handles can be replaced using a LandRover set.

Needs a 13mm (outside diameter) circlip as packing for each barrel in order to compensate for the thinner escutcheon flange.

Brilliant. Thanks Phil.

I need to source a complete passenger side metal handle. I have a hinged side door and the fork/spring etc is missing. I saw one on ebay but it had a different connecting mechanism (no fork).

Oh well, these things take time. Something will turn up.
